Parents/Guardians,

We strongly encourage the use of Ed Line here at Coleman Middle School.  Although it is not a requirement for our teachers to use the product, many of our teachers find it to be a useful form of communication between themselves, their students, and you.

The intent of Ed Line is to provide parents/guardians with information that gives an overview of the performance of their student in a particular class. Typically, teachers update Ed Line with assignments and grades ranging from once a week to once a month, depending on their schedule and the number of grades posted during the semester.  Every teacher is on his/her own schedule for uploads and that schedule should be respected.

Ed Line can be a useful tool for teachers to post information for students to access regarding grades, policies, assignments and announcements. Please encourage your student to use this tool to engineer their own success in school.

When parents/guardians view Ed Line information, their first discussion should be with their student.  In most cases, a student will be able to explain grades that are low or incomplete, and oftentimes have much more information about the ‘reasons behind the grades’ than the teacher.  If parents still require further information about a grade, they are, of course, free to contact the teacher via email or telephone.

Please understand that the posting of grades is intended as a means for parents/guardians to counsel their student toward optimal achievement.  Grades from teachers are not open for debate, and teachers should not be expected to clarify the reason behind the grade for every assignment.  This ‘open grade book’ program is just that, a snapshot of grades for a particular class.  The rationale and teacher analysis behind each grade is and should continue to be exclusive to the teacher.  In nearly all cases, students know exactly why they were given a particular grade and should be able to disseminate that information to their parent/guardian.

Most of our teachers are happy to provide you with assignments and grades via Ed Line and we hope to be able to continue to use this mechanism of communication in the future.
